Mapping Presidential Fundraising

The major candidates for president raised more than $80 million during the second quarter of 2011, according to FEC reports. Here’s where the money came from, with darker shades representing larger dollar amounts: 

The view above could also be a population map. The money comes, in large measure, from the most populous states. But the view below factors in that population, creating a per capita donation rate showing that Vermont, Massachusetts and, especially, Utah, gave more than other states as a proportion of their population:
